Winneba Masquerade Festival : The First Party Of The Year In Ghana

Image
If you want to start your New Year with colour, celebration, and pure energy, there is only one place to be on 1st January, Winneba . While everybody is still sleeping after 31st Night, Winneba is already awake. Drums, brass band, costumes, masks. This is the Winneba Masquerade Festival, locally called Fancy Dress. It is the first major festival in Ghana every year. And it is the second biggest festival in Winneba after Aboakyer. There is a morning in Winneba that does not feel like any other morning in Ghana. By 7am, you can hear it. The brass band far away. The drum, shouting and the crowd. If you are in Winneba on that day, you cannot stay in your room. The sound will drag you out. I remember the first time I followed the sound. I thought something had happened. I thought maybe there was a funeral. But when I reached the road, I saw something I had never seen before. Men wearing masks. Big, colourful, scary, beautiful masks. Some looked like animals. Some looked like old white men ...

Ghana Founder’s Day : Honoring Dr. Kwame Nkrumah

Today, September 21st, Ghana celebrates Founders Day- a day dedicated to honoring the men and women who fought for Ghana's independence.

Ghana celebrates Founders Day

While we stop to remember every hero who poured their sweat and blood into birth our great nation, today holds a deeply personal weight. Today, we cast a special spotlight on Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the legendary founder and first President of Ghana, who came into this world on September 21, 1909.

Who Was Dr. Kwame Nkrumah?

More than just a political leader, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was a fierce Pan-Africanist, an unstoppable freedom fighter, and the architectural mastermind behind Ghana’s historic break from British colonial rule on March 6, 1957

Nkrumah did not just dream of a free Ghana; he carried the weight of an entire continent on his shoulders. He famously shook the world by declaring that our independence is completely meaningless unless it is linked to the total liberation of Africa.

Why We Celebrate Founders Day?

Founder’s Day isn't just a date on the calendar; it is a monument to collective resilience. Following the passage of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Amendment Bill, this statutory public holiday firmly secures our history in place. It honors the shared sacrifices of the legends who paved our way—most notably the Big Six:
  •  Dr. Kwame Nkrumah
  • Dr. J.B. Danquah
  • Edward Akufo-Addo
  • Emmanuel Obetsebi-Lamptey
  • William Ofori Atta
  • Ebenezer Ako-Adjei

How Ghanaians Are Celebrating Today
  • The Ultimate Musical Homage:
The celebrations reached a fever pitch last night at Nkroful, the very birthplace and ancestral hometown of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. Climaxing the annual NkrumahFest, thousands of fans stormed the NASS Park to witness an iconic, history-making performance by Africa's Dancehall King, Shatta Wale.
  • Solemn Remembrance:
Citizens and leaders gather for moving wreath-laying ceremonies at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park in Accra.

As we reflect on our rich history and dance into the future, let us carry the ultimate charge of our founding fathers in our everyday lives. Ghana’s journey is ongoing, and the responsibility to shape its destiny rests squarely on our shoulders. In the spirit of the true African legend himself, we look ahead with unwavering hope and pride.

Ghana is moving, the culture is thriving, and as a united people, we continue to face forward.

Happy Founder’s Day, Ghana! 🇬🇭
